Shopping at a Post Exchange (PX) or Base Exchange (BX), which is operated by the Army Air Force Exchange Services (AAFES), is one of the many privileges extended to servicemembers and their dependents. Furthermore, according to AAFES, on average, customers save 20% by shopping at the PX/BX versus other commercial retail or discount stores.

To help you stretch your budget even further, here are several ways that you can add to your savings when shopping at the PX or BX:

1. AAFES Coupons
Before you make a trip to the PX or BX, stop by the AAFES official Facebook page and browse through their lengthy list of coupons that are made available exclusively for Facebook fans.

2. Local Exchange Buddy List
Want to be one of the first to know about sales, promotions and exclusive offers featured at your local PX or BX? If so, simply join their Buddy List and receive all the info via e-mail. You can also add your name to more than one Buddy List if you'd like to receive notifications about offers from other Exchanges that aren't in your immediate area. Sign up instructions are located here.

3. Using Online Coupons
Maximize your savings by using online coupons. Besides standard hard-copy coupons such as the ones found in magazines, Sunday newspapers and on product packages, AAFES also accepts coupons printed from online sources such as Red Plum and Coupons.com.

Also, when searching online for coupons don't forget to visit Web sites for a particular product or company because many of them such as Betty Crocker.com, Pilsbury.com, Campbells.com, among others, offer coupons that aren't listed on the popular coupon sites.

4. Shop Online
If you don't live near an AAFES store, which is common among members of the Reserve and Guard, you can still take advantage of their low prices by shopping online at the AAFES Web site. Besides getting a great deal on name brand products, you won't pay sales tax and standard shipping is free. (Note, this does not apply for purchases made at the Online Mall, which is a collection of popular stores that offer military discounts.)

5. AAFES Online Savings Club
By joining the AAFES Online Savings Club you'll be notified via their newsletter of upcoming sales and promotions. You'll also receive exclusive coupons that are only available to club members. To sign up, please go to the AAFES Web site and select "Join Our Online Savings Club" from the menu on the right side of the page.

6. BYOB – Bring Your Own Bag
Want to do something positive for the environment? Bring in your own reusable bags when shop at the PX or BX and you'll save 5 cents off your bill for each bag used. Please note, to qualify for the discount, bags cannot be plastic, such as the ones you generally receive from the PX, BX, commissary or other grocery or discount stores.

Granted, 5 cents per bag may not seem like a significant savings, but over time it does add up. Furthermore, you won't need to worry about the bags breaking while you're hauling your purchases into the house. If you're interested in partaking in this this program, participating AAFES stores are located on the following military installations:

7. Don't Always Stick to Your List
Overall, lists are great because they keep the shopper focused on purchasing the items that they need/want, which in turn often cuts down on impulse spending. However, not sticking strictly to your list may end up saving you money in the long run.

For example, if you see an item on sale—a product that you frequently use or the perfect gift for an upcoming birthday, anniversary or other celebratory occasion—go ahead and purchase it if your funds allow you to do so. Why pay more later if you don't have to?

8. Use Layaway
Did you know that AAFES has a layaway program? To qualify for this service, your selected items must total at least $25. You'll also be required to pay a deposit of 15% of your merchandise total as well as a $3 nonrefundable service fee.

There are several restrictions on the type of merchandise that qualifies for the layaway program as well as how long particular items can be placed on layaway. To ensure that you receive factual information, please contact your local PX or BX and ask them about their layaway program's policy.
