Their history is rich and dates back to 1918 when Grace Darling Seibold's son died in WWI. Wanting to put her grief to good use, Grace reached out to other grieving mothers.
Membership grew and in 1928, twenty-five members met in Washington DC and made plans to create a national organization. In 1929 the organization incorporated and became an officially established non-profit organization now known as the Gold Star Mothers of America .
In 1936 Congress approved the last Sunday in September as "Gold Star Mothers Day."
