TRICARE Reserve Select Health Plan


Did you know that TRICARE offers a health care plan for members of the Selected Reserves? If not, don't feel bad as many reserve families are unaware of the TRICARE Reserve Select health plan.

About the Plan
The TRICARE Reserve Select is a premium based, cost share, health plan. What this means is that if you enroll in the plan you will pay a monthly premium for the coverage. Once you meet the annual deductible you will then be eligible to participate in the cost share part of the plan.

About the Deductibles
The annual deductible is determined by the servicemembers rank and whether or not he or she has the individual or family plan. The dollar amount ranges anywhere from $50 to $300.

In order to be eligible for this plan, servicemembers in the Selected Reserves of the Ready Reserves must meet the following criteria:

  • He or she is not on active duty orders.
  • He or she is not covered under the Transitional Assistance Management Program (TAMP).
  • He or she is not eligible or enrolled in the Federal Employee Health Benefits (FEHB) program.

Premium Rates and Deductibles
According to TRICARE, the following premium rates for calendar year 2013 are:

  • Member only: $51.62 per month
  • Member and family: $195.81 per month

The fiscal year for TRICARE is October 1-September 30, which mean that you must meet the annual outpatient deductible sometime during this timeframe in order for the cost-sharing to go into effect. The rates for the annual deductible for 2013 are:

  • Sponsor Rank E-4 and below: $50 per individual (If only the servicemember is covered.)
  • Sponsor Rank E-4 and below: $100 per family
  • Sponsor Rank E-5 and above: $150 per individual (If only the servicemember is covered.)
  • Sponsor Rank E-5 and above: $300 per family

Services Covered
The TRICARE Reserve Select health plan provides coverage for a wide variety of services including, but not limited to:

  • Emergency Care
  • Ambulance Services
  • Outpatient Visits
  • Maternity Care
  • Hospitalization
  • Prescriptions
  • Mental/Behavioral Health Services
  • Preventative Care which includes immunizations and wellness exams

Paying Your Premiums
Upon enrollment you will be required to submit two months of premium payments with your application. And then, beginning in 2013, TRICARE Reserve Select premium payments will only be accepted via a credit/debit card or electronic fund transfer (EFT).
