Military Pay Dates for Calendar Year 2012

By

Military paydays occur twice a month and are referred to as mid-month pay and end-of-month (EOM) pay. However, don't be fooled by the "end-of-month" reference because as you will notice, the EOM pay is often received on the first day of the month. Furthermore, unlike various civilian jobs where employees receive their paycheck on specific days of the month, military pay dates fluctuate due to weekends and holidays. For example, July's mid-month pay occurs on July 13 because July 15 is a Sunday.

For bill paying and budgeting purposes, here are the military paydays for calendar year 2012. (Note: if you're a retiree, please scroll down to view the Retirement Pay Dates for 2012.) Also, beneath the Retirement Pay Dates you'll find information about myPay and how to decipher your Leave and Earnings Statement (LES).

2012 Retirement Pay Dates
Back in October 2011, the pay dates for retirees changed. This change was implemented to comply with the new 2011 National Defense Authorization Act. Now, retirees will be paid on the first day of the month. When the first day of the month occurs on a weekend or national holiday the retiree's pay will be processed on the previous business day.

If you have questions regarding your retirement pay, please feel free to call customer service at Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) at 1-800-321-1080. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. (EST). For additional information regarding this change in pay dates please see the FAQ page at DFAS.

Knowing Your Pay in Advance
For various reasons, sometimes a servicemember's pay may fluctuate. If you would like to see the exact amount of your paycheck several days before you receive it, you may do so by simply logging into your myPay account. Besides viewing a variety of pay related information, to include your W-2's, you'll be able to see your Leave and Earnings Statement (LES) before the funds are released.

Not sure what a myPay account is? You can find a detailed explanation here. Furthermore, instructions for creating a myPay account are located here.

Understanding Your Pay
If you are having difficulties understanding your Leave and Earnings Statement (LES)—the military's version of a pay stub—don't despair as many servicemembers (to include their spouses) often have questions pertaining to the various "fields" featured on this document.

Although the form is the same, the information that it contains varies depending on whether you are active duty or a member of the Reserve or National Guard.

Active duty personnel can find detailed instructions here. Members of the Reserve and Guard component can find a thorough explanation here.
