We've all done it at one time or another—checked our mailbox repeatedly throughout the day or wasted time by stopping by the post office to purchase stamps or mail a package, card or letter only to learn that they're closed.

Most people know that the post office is closed on all of the major holidays like Christmas Day, Labor Day, etc. but what happens when the actual holiday falls on a Sunday like this year's Veteran's Day (which incidentally is always November 11)?

To help you plan ahead and to avoid making any unnecessary stops at the post office or risking the late arrival of any time-sensitive material such as bills, cards, letters or care packages, the post will be closed on the following days in 2012:

  • Monday, January 2, 2012 – New Year's Day (observed)
  • Monday, January 16, 2012 – Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday (observed)
  • Monday, February 20, 2012 – Washington's birthday (President's Day)
  • Monday, May 28, 2012 – Memorial Day
  • Wednesday, July 4, 2012 – Independence Day
  • Monday, September 3, 2012 – Labor Day
  • Monday, October 8, 2012 – Columbus Day
  • Monday, November 12, 2012 – Veterans Day
  • Thursday, November 22, 2012 – Thanksgiving
  • Tuesday, December 22, 2012 – Christmas Day

And just in case you're curious, UPS regular pick-up and delivery will not occur on the following days:

  • Monday, May 28, 2012 - Memorial Day
  • Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - Independence Day
  • Monday, September 3, 2012 - Labor Day
  • Thursday, November 22, 2012 - Thanksgiving Day
  • Friday, November 23, 2012 - Day after Thanksgiving
  • Tuesday, December 25, 2012 - Christmas
  • Monday, December 31, 2012 - New Year's Eve
  • Tuesday, January 1, 2013 - New Year's Day
